KYSAFE reminds employers to make heat stress prevention a priority

KYSAFE Occupational Safety & Health
With daytime temperatures increasing in the commonwealth, KYSAFE is kicking off a heat stress prevention campaign to help employers protect Kentucky workers.

Heat is a recognized occupational hazard that can result in serious illness or even death when workers are not provided adequate workplace protections. Heat stress can affect indoor or outdoor workers exposed to high temperatures, radiant heat sources, high humidity and/or strenuous physical activities.

KYSAFE reminds Kentucky employers of their legal responsibility to protect workers from heat-related illnesses. Remember to:

  • Monitor employees and provide sufficient water, rest breaks and access to shade.
  • Allow employees to gradually acclimate to hot working conditions.
  • Be prepared for heat illness emergencies and know what to do.

Learn the differences between heat exhaustion and heat stroke and find valuable heat stress prevention tips on KYSAFE’s website. Informative video presentations on occupational heat planning, indoor heat stress and much more are also available on the site, as well as KYSAFE’s YouTube channel. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration website is another great resource for information on heat illness and heat stress prevention.

KYSAFE offers free, confidential consultation and training services for employers who wish to proactively identify and address potential safety and health hazards. The program also builds alliances with Kentucky employers to promote worker safety through high-quality education and technical assistance. Visit kysafe.ky.gov to learn more about our free services.
