Eighteen Kentucky officials join largest convening of county leaders

National Association of Counties annual conference held July 11-14

Officials from 18 Kentucky counties recently attended the National Association of Counties (NACo) Annual Conference and Exposition in the City and County of Philadelphia, Pa. The nation’s largest meeting of county leaders drew more than 3,400 attendees to discuss a wide range of policy issues, exchange best practices and hear from inspirational speakers and thought leaders.

The Kentucky delegation included members from Boone, Boyle, Butler, Carlisle, Floyd, Green, Hardin, Harlan, Henry, Jefferson, McCracken, Menifee, Metcalfe, Oldham, Scott, Union, Warren and Webster counties.

Dozens of conference sessions featured policy and subject matter experts, private sector and nonprofit thought leaders, and intergovernmental partners. The sessions included all-day learning forums themed around pressing county issues like workforce development and local government fiscal health.

Other highlights included:

  • Webster County Judge/Executive Steve Henry spoke during a forum featuring NACo's Building Resilient Counties in Coal Communities initiative
  • Jefferson County Circuit Court Clerk chaired NACo’s Audit Committee.
  • Harlan County Judge/Executive and KACo President Dan Mosley was interviewed about opioid recovery efforts in rural communities.
  • Boone County Judge/Executive Gary Moore, a past president of both KACo and NACo, chaired the inaugural meeting of the Midsize County Caucus.

The conference provided attendees with resources to help address key issues, including mental health, housing affordability, infrastructure, artificial intelligence, disaster preparedness, effective governance and operations, federal public lands management, workforce and economic development and civic engagement.

As a benefit provided to county elected officials, the Kentucky Association of Counties (KACo) covers membership dues at the national level. All 120 Kentucky counties are NACo members.
