Bill expands definition of what jail canteen funds

By
Bill expands definition of what jail canteen funds may be used for while maintaining the intent to use the funds for the benefit of prisoners in those jails.

On Jan. 10, 2018, House Bill 92, sponsored by Rep. Jill York (R-Grayson), was unanimously passed by the House Local Government Committee.

Christian County Jailer Brad Boyd, who also serves as president of the Kentucky Jailers Association, and Carter County Jailer R.W. Boggs testified with Rep. York in favor of the legislation.

Current law allows the funds to be used "for the benefit and to being and to enhance the well-being of the prisoners." The bill expands the definition of what jail canteen funds may be used for while maintaining the intent to use the funds for the benefit of prisoners by adding language "to enhance the safety and security within the jail." We thank Rep. York for her continued support of county jail issues and her work on this legislation.

The bill moves on to the House floor for a full chamber vote. Ask your representative to support HB 92. You can read the full text here: www.lrc.ky.gov/recorddocuments/bill/18RS/HB92/bill.pdf.
