County officials are expected to communicate clearly, respond quickly and build trust with the communities they serve.
Whether highlighting county initiatives or navigating emergencies, strong relationships with the media can make all the difference in delivering the best message in a timely manner.
To help county leaders strengthen these skills, KACo will host Building Local Trust – Engaging the Media, an immersive, hands-on training designed to provide a deeper understanding of today’s media landscape and how county officials can more effectively engage with it.
This unique in-person experience goes beyond traditional classroom training by taking participants inside the newsroom itself. Warren County Judge/Executive Doug Gorman and WNKY will host the training.
The day will begin with practical training communication strategies during a session led by KACo Director of Communications Brenna Angel. Attendees will learn techniques for developing concise talking points, staying on message under pressure, and navigating difficult questions while avoiding common interview pitfalls.
KACo Staff Attorney Rich Ornstein and county attorneys will hold a panel discussion exploring transparency and legal and ethical considerations county leaders face when communicating with the public.
Attendees also will hear directly from local media professionals about how television, radio, print and digital news outlets operate, what reporters need from county officials, and why credibility and accessibility are essential to building public trust.
The day concludes with a behind-the-scenes tour of a the WNKY station, providing participants with the opportunity to meet reporters and gain a firsthand look at newsroom operations.
