Senator Thomas proposes election bills for voting age and early voting

State Sen. Reginald Thomas, D-Lexington, says that he will file two election bills for the 2019 General Assembly during a press conference on Monday. Kentucky county clerks are in charge of all elections, so this could have a major impact on how they do business.

Thomas intends to file legislation to lower the voting age in Kentucky from 18 to 16 years old.  Current law states that if a resident will be 18 years old by the November general election date, voting in the May primary election and November general election is allowed.

He also announced that he will file a bill that would allow unrestricted early voting by requiring county clerk's offices to be open on the three Saturdays leading up to an election. Kentucky law does not currently allow early voting.
